Summary

In 2021, the Ontario College of Teachers (the OCT) hosted a virtual event on Indigenous Ways of Knowing in Teacher Education for teachers, education partners, stakeholders, parents/guardians of students, and the general public. Historically, their events were held in-person, but the event was shifted to an online format for safety measures. For this event, English and French language accessibility were paramount. The event was hosted on the KUDO platform with interpreters from KUDO’s interpreter network.

“We chose KUDO for the seamless live translation feature and the training and support provided by their staff.”

Live French translation and the event’s accessibility, regardless of the attendees’ locations, allowed us to host a virtual event that reached over 700 people.”

Removing language barriers and obstacles

The OCT would have to book venues and host multiple planning meetings at past in-person events. Serving members across Ontario, which is 1.5 times larger than Texas, these events would be held numerous times in multiple cities to reach all of their members. Furthermore, they needed to find French or English speakers depending on their particular audience’s language.

With KUDO’s live interpretation platform, their virtual event could be accessed by anyone, regardless of their location, in either French or English with support from professional interpreters. KUDO allowed the OCT to streamline their event planning process and host a singular event accessible and inclusive with live interpretation support. Additionally, they could use KUDO’s recording features to send English or French versions of the event to those who weren’t able to attend.

How did we do it?

Each KUDO-supported event is unique, with clients holding different expectations and needs. The OCT, never working with KUDO before, needed to be familiarized with the platform, and KUDO provided regular trainings and additional support during the event itself. Additionally, to provide the best quality interpretation, the interpreters that were sourced from KUDO’s network were familiar with the event’s topic.

With KUDO’s lobby feature, presenters could make last-minute preparations for the event while attendees waited in a digital waiting room. In addition to KUDO’s dropdown language selector, live captioning in English and French was available to attendees, increasing accessibility. KUDO provided the OCT with a full report, showing attendance and participation numbers post-event.

We will continue using KUDO to host virtual events with live translation to engage with our members, education partners, stakeholders, parents/guardians of students, and the general public.”
